What You Need to Know

Local Customs
Though exposed to many influences of US culture, the people of American Samoa preserve the traditional fa’a-Samoa (Samoan way of life). While here, please respect the local culture and practices.
  • Elderly and Chiefs
It is wise to ask a local resident on the proper etiquette before approaching an elder or chief you have not been introduced to. If this is not an option, the common courtesy of the “hand shake” with a slight bowing of the head will suffice.
  • Attire
The local people of American Samoa are very conservative when it comes to attire. When attending meetings, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees are expected. A simple lava lava (sarong wrap) is ideal when wearing shorts in public or to village meetings (men and women). Beach and field attire should also be modest. Short swim bottoms are adequate in the water as long as you cover up when on shore.
  • Sunday (Day of Prayer)
Throughout American Samoa, Sunday is considered sacred for worship and family time. Samoans are a religious community so it is common courtesy to restrict outdoor activities on this day. Loud music and events should also be limited as Samoans rest on this day. Some retailers would also be closed on Sundays so plan accordingly.
  • Sa (Sacred time of prayer)
Some villages observe what is referred to as “Sa” or sacred time in the evenings. During this time all villagers gather in homes for a time of worship and quiet reflection. You will hear a bell to signify the beginning of this sacred time. If you find yourself out and about during a Sa, make your way back to your hotel, or if this is not an option, find a place to sit quietly. You will hear the bell twice again, signifying the end of the Sa.

Other
  • Mosquitoes
There is no vaccine currently available in the Pacific for dengue fever; nor does vitamin B prevent mosquito bites. The only way to prevent infection
is to avoid being bitten by mosquitos. Although the most common time for bites is early morning and late afternoon, dengue-carrying mosquitoes
also bite all through the day. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent mosquito bites. Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats. Use an appropriate insect repellent.
  • Dogs
Be aware that feral dogs can be a problem in American Samoa. They have been known to
congregate in packs and attack and bite people, especially while jogging past. It is advisable
to carry a stick with you while walking or jogging.
  • Drinking Water
While travelling in American Samoa, buy bottled water, boil your water, or bring a filter that can eliminate pathogens. Sawyer 0.1 micron filter eliminates many bacteria and protozoa, while their 0.02 filter eliminates viruses. A UV filter and boiling are effective methods in killing pathogens. Water sourced from “village water” is village groundwater and, in general, should be boiled prior to drinking. Avoid drinking municipal tap water.
Tap water in Manua is potable.
  • Banking
Please keep in mind American Samoa has only two major financial institutions: Bank of Hawaii and ANZ Bank. These banks have non-network ATM withdrawal fees. It is also important to note that not all retailers accept debit/credit cards; most accept cash as the only form of payment, so plan accordingly. Lastly, some retailers require a minimum purchase of usually $10-$20 to use your debit/credit card.
